Networking E-Bulletin

The fortnightly Christians at Work E-Bulletins are appearing weekly just now!

Here are the latest 2 issues:

Networking E-Bulletin 17Dr11 [Being Prepared - Have the Mind of a Soldier or work is a hard hat zone!  - Ephesians 6v17, 1v13,14]

Have you remembered where you left the car keys this morning?  The mind plays tricks (more and more as we get older!) and can be used to deceive us. it is not wholly our own, free from outside influence, much as we would like it to be. So does a helmet help? The Roman soldiers, bless them, carried the helmet for use when necessary - an important consideration whenever our minds are assailed by doubt and anxiety and turmoil. "When God controls the mind, Satan cannot lead the believer astray."

Networking E-Bulletin 10Dr11 [Being Prepared - Take the Shield of Faith - Ephesians 6v16 and Hebrews 11v1-3]

If you've ever seen any films about the Romans, you'll have spotted the soldiers huddled together behind their shields. The Romans had got it to perfection, this art of having a combined cover that left no space for any assailant to exploit. They had the materials and wealth to do it, and invested accordingly. It's a lesson for God's people, individually and together. We each need the shield, and together our shields are impregnable! Workplaces are too often regarded as individual assignments - but the together bit is so crucial there, for  "work can, as you well know, be a major battlefield."

LICC Word for the Week

liccThe 2 most recently received 'Word for the Week's can be clicked here:

LICC Word for the Week 19Dr11 [The Extraordinary in the ordinary (2): What if God Was One of Us? - Luke 2v4-7]

When Antony says that, "and yet he takes his place with us in the mundaneness of the everyday world." he goes on dispel quite a few myths about the birth of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus. The story involving a stable and destitute surroundings, with no-one to help them, even though it is Joseph's home town, are all thrown out of the window, as the picture is cast of ordinariness, say, lower middle class in our modern terms. What was it like at His birth? Answers on a postcard in heaven. But, look to the last paragraph to translate this ordinariness into God's salvation plan.

LICC Word for the Week 12Dr11 [The Extraordinary in the Ordinary (1): There's Something About Mary - Luke 1v30-34]

LICC are diverting from ongoing themes, to look at Christmas events. Mary, we are told, "even if she is not an object of faith, she is an example of faith. And a very real example too." Antony goes through the various things she had to work her head around when the Annunciation took place, 6 in all. The staggering thing was her willingness to believe that the message was from God, and to take the ride, whatever the cost. Interesting how this compares with Zechariah's response, and subsequent treatment, earlier in the same chapter.

ICF this week's prayer focus

For the 2nd week of the Advent Reflection click: ICF - Advent reflections week 2.pdf

[Weeks 50,51,52 are all shown below]

This week's prayer Focus

Week 50 - commences Sunday 11th December 2011

Those who work in engineering
God of all things, we live in a world of technology, yet often enjoy it’s benefits with hardly a thought for the myriad of technical tasks and calculations on which so much relies; laws and formulae, principles and processes whose constancy in generations of discovery have enabled us to move forward the frontiers of knowledge. As we remember and give thanks for those whose understanding of these things provide us with such benefits in daily living, may we also remember that much of their work still relies on these unchanging principles whose foundation is You. The disciplines of the engineer highlight Your faithfulness, reflected in every strata of our hi-tech world; so may we be inspired us to be faithful in our service and love for You. AMEN

Prayers for:

Acoustic engineers, electronic engineers, mechanical engineers, computer engineers, civil engineers, precision engineers, power plant engineers, marine engineers, hydraulic engineers, rocket engineers, refrigerating engineers, nuclear engineers, geological engineers, fuel engineers, ceramic engineers, irrigation engineers and metallurgists.

Week 51 - commences Sunday 18th December 2011

Those involved in the business of import, export and international trade
God of all peoples, throughout history we have visited and traded with other nations, travelled to distant shores in search of new commodities and resources, broadening our horizons and experiences. Through trade our lives have been enriched, and yetit can also be the means through which we exploit and impoverish others. We pray for all those whose employement involves them in overseas trade. Help them to act fairly, seek justice and to work in the interests of all creation. Through Christ our Lord - AMEN

Prayers for:

Shipping and Air Freight agents. Fair-trade businesses and advocates Long-distance lorry and coach drivers, ferry and euro-tunnel operators

Week 52 - commences Sunday 25th December 2011

Those who are unemployed
Next week's prayer and picture are not yet up on the ICF site. This is to prompt for prayer about this, before rather than after it appears there. See ICF site (in LINKS) from Sunday 25th to get the prayer and picture.

Prayers for:

The unemployed on account of lack of jobs, lack of physical, mental or emotional health, lack of motivation, lack of skills; those whose retirement has removed their zest for life, alienated school students, and those caught in benefit traps which make it too costly to work if they are to provide for their families.

Last update, December 9th (new prayers, 3 new specific items, plus updates on 3 regular featured inputs):

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) Who's Clara Thompson? An unusual visitor to the airport!
bullet2) And a nightingale sang - at Rolls-Royce carols event
bullet3) Mark Greene's message on jobs and the launch of 'Work Forum'.

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 2nd December update

1) Who's Clara Thompson? An unusual visitor to the airport!

Our local chaplain in the East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team (EMACT), Rev'd Dr Moira Biggins, has reported on this unusual visitor to the airport:

"The East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team acquired a new member during October and November – but she wasn’t real. Clara Thompson was a character in the play Skybus, in which actors and audience board a bus in Derby and travel to East Midlands Airport and back, the play going on all the time. Clara, as chaplain, gave pastoral and practical care to the other characters, and prompted them to think about the deeper issues of life. One important scene took place in the airport Prayer Room; for added realism, Clara’s picture was displayed on the Prayer Room notice board alongside the real chaplains!"

bullet"You mean this play was taking place on the bus?" It sure sounds that way.
bulletThat picture of Clara and the 'real' chaplains must be worth showing. We'll see if Moira will let us take a photo of it.
bulletDo the chaplains need to worry about Clara taking over?

[This item is also placed in the airport section on the TRANSPORT page, where you can learn more of who the chaplains are what they do at the airport.]

2) And a nightingale sang - at Rolls-Royce carols event

Nigel and Miles, the chaplains for the Rolls-Royce sites, have notified us of the carols event for people on the Derby sites.

Nigel writes:

"Hi Everyone,

The carol service is a great time to join with other work colleagues from other sites to remember the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.  It was great that so many came last year, not only is it an encouragement for everyone who attended, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for you to get to know others in the organisation who worship our Saviour.   This year the Carol service is planned for Wednesday 14th

December in the Nightingale Hall starting at 12:15pm.

Unfortunately Miles and I are not able to attend because of other commitments, so we’re going to be missing out on seeing you and joining with you. It would be great if you could support this and perhaps get some of your work colleagues to come and air their lungs in singing carols, rather than the more secular Christmas songs.  You never know but it may just be that your invitation to someone you work with may be just the prompt they need to meet with with the one God sent into the world to be our Saviour.  Please pray for all who will have any part in the Carol Service."

Their poster, which shows a picture very appropriate to the 'Nightingale Hall', can be accessed at:                    Rolls-Royce carols poster 2011

3) Mark Greene's message on jobs and the launch of 'Work Forum'.

On behalf of London Institute for Contemporary Christianity, their Director, Mark Greene [pictured right, courtesy LICC website], has given a Christmas message about work and jobs:

LICC - Christmas message on jobs

bulletRead all about how Dave, Ed, and Karen, make the working lives of those around them "just a smidgen more human, a smidgen more productive".
bulletTake a look at the LICC Work Forum, launching on January 9th, with "eight strategic initiatives designed to help Christians be more fruitful at work"
bulletOh yes, they want money for it as well!
bulletWe will watch this development and see what there is to learn from it.

Last update, December 2nd (new prayers, 4 new specific items, plus updates on 3 regular featured inputs):

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) Industrial Christian Fellowship does an Advent reflections series for this season.
bullet2) Workplace carols events - coming very soon!
bullet3) Supporting in prayer - DFRS Welfare Officer and family at a critical time
bullet4) Clergy Conference - WCD woz there!

1) Industrial Christian Fellowship does an Advent reflections series for this season.

Industrial Christian Fellowship (ICF) has a heart for the working life of Christian people. We already publish their weekly guides for prayer about specific groups of occupations in which people can be engaged.

ICF Chair (he is no longer Vice Chair, it seems?), Rev'd Phil Jump [pictured right], often writes something on current topics in the news. He has covered the public sector pensions dispute and the Occupy London camp, to name but two.

This Advent season, he has written "A series of daily reflections for the working week"

These reflections are called 'Down to Earth - Reflections for Advent' and show a glossy photo of earth seen from space. The first week's reflections cover a range of people:

bulletAbram's journey - and our advent journey
bulletJoseph's life journey - patience and persistence
bulletRuth's journey - the destiny of the world even today depended on it!
bulletDaniel - overcoming persecution through life action
bulletJesus said "follow me" - "The things that stand between Jesus and those that aspire to be his disciples are what many would describe as basic human rights."

The first week's reflections can be read at:

3) Supporting in prayer - DFRS Welfare Officer and family at a critical time

Lyn Voce, Welfare Officer, with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) is asking for prayers for her husband, Brian, who is seriously ill in hospital at present.

Lyn writes at:    Brian Voce   in a remarkably upbeat manner.

All of us WCD pray for Lyn and Brian, and call on others to share in this.

If anyone wants to offer messages of support to Lyn and Brian, please send in to the WCD office imd01@queenshall.plus.com or imd002@googlemail.com and we will forward them on.

4) Clergy Conference - WCD woz there!

The Diocesan Clergy Conference took place at Swanwick last week. WCD had a stall there, and had chaplains on hand to chat with anyone interested to look.

Our thanks are due to those who 'manned' the stall at various times. You show that chaplains have faces and can communicate what you do and why. Thank you!

We will keep you informed about feedback and any developments from it, as well about future events of this kind.

Last update, November 18/25th (new prayers, 4 new specific items, plus updates on 3 regular featured inputs):

This update is an extension of last week's (18th November) with items 3 and 4 below added, and the regular items updated again this week (25th November).

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) We Will Remember Them - at the railway station
bullet2) Are you losing out? - chaplaincy vacancies still' out there'
bullet3) City Centre Chaplaincy work - invitation to Licensing
bullet4) The Rolls-Royce chaplains drink coffee, meet apprentices, and travel the land!

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 11th November update

1) "We Will Remember Them" - at the railway station

That part of Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen', first published in 1914 after the Battle of the Marne became the first awakening of the horrors of war, has been recited in countless places every November since 1919.

At one end of platform 1 at Derby Midland Station, Rev'd James Lindsay [pictured left], chaplain for the railways in the East Midlands area, once again led a tribute to the fallen. There were old soldiers there, and many with connections to the railways and railway industries, past and as present employees.

Read about it, and view the pictures, at:

Remembrance 11Nr11

The programme that was available for participants can be viewed at:

2) Are you losing out? - chaplaincy vacancies still 'out there'

At next week's Diocese of Derby Clergy Conference, the WCD stall and displays will be there, hoping to attract anyone with love for God and love for people, in the hope that more workplaces can benefit from the presence of a chaplain.

The picture, right, shows the 'spreading out' of chaplaincy work covered by WCD-supported chaplains. This diagram needs updating, as extra chaplaincies have come into being since its creation, but it gives an idea of the sort of thing that goes on.

But, there remain many places without a chaplain. So this is a bit of an appeal. At the Conference, we will offer an up-to-date list of chaplaincy vacancies. For this to be right we need YOU to tell us where the vacancies actually are!

[The old Kitchener 'your country needs you' poster - WCD needs your information on vacancies.]

The last known list of chaplaincy vacancies is the collection published as follows:

ASDA - Long Eaton                                       ASDA - Sinfin

The next section being highlighted from this year's Annual Report (to read the Annual Report click: Annual report 2010-11) is about the chaplains and chaplaincy work at Rolls-Royce.

The chaplains are Miles Mitson and Nigel Selby.

They are regular contributors to WCD publications, with Miles and Nigel writing chaplains letters.

Their contribution to the Annual Report can be read at:

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) City Centre Chaplaincy work - developments in personnel and ministry
bullet2) Peace or war - we can't choose but God is sovereign - Rolls-Royce chaplains letter for November
bullet3) 1st notifications of workplace carols events!

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 4th November update

1) City Centre Chaplaincy work - developments in personnel and ministry

The Derby City Centre chaplaincy, headed up by Rev'd Paul Morris, Vicar of St Peter's in the centre, is continuing to grow and expand.

So much so, that it has resulted in Ministry developments for himself and for one of the chaplains and for the Church. Paul will tell you in his own words:

"Dear friends,

As you know, the Derby City Centre Chaplaincy officially began in February, but it is growing and in order to oversee further development, I need to give more time to this ministry.  Therefore, it has been agreed that my colleague, Anita Matthews, who lives in Derby and works for CMS in Oxford, will leave CMS and serve full-time at St. Peter's.

It would be great if some members of the Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire were able to come to this Licensing Service on January 9th.  The service will be in St. Peter's and the BookCafe, which is where all the chaplains have met with me prior to their appointment!

This idea of the service taking place both in and outside of the church is something that John and I discussed even before Derby City Centre Chaplaincy was up and running, so I am delighted it is happening!

Grace and peace,

Paul"

Note - the above picture has been added to Paul's message. it was taken at the City Centre launch in February, and, yes........Rev'd Anita Matthews is one of 3 chaplains shown here!

2) Peace or war - we can't choose but God is sovereign - Rolls-Royce chaplains letter for November

Rolls-Royce chaplain Nigel Selby [on right of picture] has forwarded another chaplains newsletter. it is once more written by his fellow-chaplain, Miles Mitson [on left].

Nigel introduces Mile letter with these words:

"Hi everyone, we are looking at the whole issue of peace this month.  I’m grateful to miles for his thoughts which you will find in the attached file.  I have spoken to a number of folk recently whose work is not easy because of the commitment that are required of them.  Miles gives us a opportunity to remember our real source of peace in all circumstances.

Many Thanks

Nigel Selby

This must be the week for being reminded of the constancy of warfare, conflict and stress in life, and that God doesn't necessarily take it away but remains in control throughout. [See Christians at work E-Bulletin, below, for more on this subject.]

2) Police chaplaincy - the 'dominating word', training and a direct point of view!

The Annual Report of Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD)

Annual report 2010-11

is produced in time for the AGM, which took place this year on May 22nd. We aim to publicise the work of our wonderful chaplains, and their contributions to the Annual Report is a source of material.

Derbyshire Constabulary logo

This week the Police chaplaincy is offered for a focus of their work. This is among the larger chaplaincy provisions in Derbyshire, with some 22 locations being listed on Alphabetical list of chaplaincy locations, although some of them have vacancies for new faces at present.

[Lynette Houghton, pictured on the left, and Mair Bradley, centre, are among the many chaplains going out with the police in all weathers!]

Rev'd Canon Keith Orford [pictured left], former Chairman of IMD (as it was then called), is the Police chaplains co-ordinator. His section in the Annual Report can be clicked at:

There you can discover:

bulletWhat is the 'dominating word' over the past year
bulletWhen the forces' change will happen, and the effect upon the chaplaincy work
bulletabout linking with the University on chaplaincy training
bulletthe forthright views on 'the cuts' by one individual police chaplain

That last item, the final section in the police bit of the Annual Report, pulls no punches. Worth a look!

1) Agricultural Chaplain  - farmers prayer, Bakewell at Work

1) Farmers Prayer support continues to meet.

The Farmers Prayer and Fellowship meeting, organised and convened by Agricultural Chaplain, Graham Hinds [pictured left], meets monthly on Mondays.

Graham has provided information on the remaining meetings for 2011. [Unfortunately, the internet problems at the WCD office means that the October meeting has now passed.]

He writes:

"Paul

Prayer for Farmers - dates Mon 10th October; Monday 14th November, Monday 5th December

See attachment - an article I wrote recently for "Bakewell at Work" - a local initiative and quarterly newsheet

3) Christians at Work Conference, and work of General Secretary.

Christians at Work and their General Secretary, Rev'd Brian Allenby [pictured left], are tireless in their efforts to bolster and support believers in the workplace.

In the last year or so, they have been best with financial problems, re-organisation, and Brian's health.

But they did stage the Annual Conference this year.

Brain writes about his health and work situation and about the Conference. read at:

CatW Conference and General Secretary

We mention this for prayers for Brian to be restored to carry the good name of Jesus into workplaces and Churches, connecting faith and work together.

4) LICC - Vacancy for Communications Manager.

Here is an organisation that is trying to get it's message 'out there' and are specifically investing to do so!

London Institute forlicc Contemporary Christianity (LICC) is well-known to WCD readers; they produce material and do events aiming to equip people for Christian living, a major part of which is in the workplace.

The job vacancy can be viewed at: LICC Job Opportunity

The opening line of which, states:

"Getting the message out: a vital new role"

We couldn't agree more. Getting the message out there is crucial for any organisation. WCD has a long way to go in this respect. Please bear with us, we are trying!

Last update, October 11th (new prayers, 3 new specific items, plus updates on 3 regular featured inputs):

[We offer readers our apologies that it has taken this long to get the next update out. The technical difficulties have now been resolved - thanks are due to Phil for sorting this out.]

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) Church support recognised by Bombardier MD + Rail Magazine and Facebook pictures
bullet2) Website review - Working Party convened.
bullet3) Where now for working people in the face of economic and political reality?

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 23rd September update

1) Church support recognised by Bombardier MD + Rail Magazine and Facebook pictures

1) MD thanks Churches for support.

The future of the Bombardier works continues to be at the top of our concerns, when it comes to jobs and livelihoods of local people in Derby and Derbyshire.

Chaplain Ian [pictured left] continues to do a great job, visiting the site, talking with workers, attending meetings - and speaking at campaign gatherings, as he did at Landau Forte on 1st September.

[And he calls in to the office to keep us posted! Thanks, Ian.]

Ian writes:

"Hi all - It was very good that Colin Walton recognised the churches' contribution at Litchurch on Friday. I 've attached the latest thoughts on the situation from the railway press. I think it's good common sense and realistic.

Best wishes

Ian"

The above reference about MD Colin Walton [pictured left] recognising the Church's contribution, refers to the visit to Derby of the Archbishop of Canterbury [pictured right], when Colin had chance to speak to him. He is particularly grateful to Ian for getting stuck in at the works.

2) Rail Magazine article on Bombardier.

Ian's reference to the railway press is another article from Nigel Harris in the Rail Magazine. See 29th July update for his previous article about Bombardier, and a bit about the man himself. His latest offering is in the form of .jpg file, and can be made available on request.

Ian sums up the situation in terms of saying that the Thameslink order has gone, so move on and look for orders elsewhere. In that field, it is suggested that the noises made over the Thameslink deal have had some effect, in that Ministers are likely to look more keenly at how future contracts are ordered.

That's why we did it! Let's keep up the active support for this local workforce.

3) Facebook pictures of Bombardier rally in July

Rev'd Michael Futers has written:

"Paul

There’s also an album of pictures of the Bombardier march and rally on my Facebook page.  Look under Michael Futers, it’s open access.

Michael"

We apologise to Michael for taking so long to report his offering. Enjoy the pictures.

2) Website review - Working Party convened.

Due to technical problems with computers the update couldn't be got out on Friday 30th as planned.

The WCD Council meeting (Tuesday 4th October) has now taken place.

The outcome of the website review item on that agenda is that a Working Party has been set up under the convening of Rev'd Dr Moira Biggins [pictured right, cutting cake at EMACT 10th anniversary], who is a long-standing Council member and chaplain at East Midlands Airport.

We wish Moira well with this, hoping that the website, as well other WCD activity, remains true to the vision statement on the ABOUT WCD page.

Some observations made about the website at the meeting:

bulletHow contemporary or accessible is the site?
bulletWhat do other sites do, eg http://www.northumbrianindustrialmission.org, do that WCD's doesn't do?
bulletThe WCD website needs new technology to make it look more contemporary.
bulletThe structure should "invite you in".
bulletThe website is an "instrument that holds us together".
bulletThe need for a space, accessed by chaplains, for sharing things (the DISCUSSION TOPICS page aimed for this, but isn't restricted access, nor does it have an interactive facility allowing direct participation.)

All of the above things have been on the web managers mind for some time, but will take time to accomplish, perhaps affecting the regular production of updates. When the Working Group has convened, we will update you. Bear with us in the likely transition! Thanks.

The Website Review August 2011 page is still open to visit and read the review comments made prior to the Council meeting, and the Web manager's report on the matter.

back to 11th October update

3) Where now for working people in the face of economic and political reality?

There can be no-one today in a working or seeking work situation who remains unaffected by local, national, and world politics and economics. Our fears and worries for our futures are everywhere evident in workplace concerns, as our WCD-supported chaplains are hearing constantly nowadays. We wonder whether anything will turn, and who has the power and wisdom and authority to make it happen.

With the Party Conference season going on as we speak, Industrial Christian fellowship Vice-Chair, Rev'd Phil Jump [pictured right], has written an article in which he:

bulletdescribes the bankruptcy of way, ideas, and terms, for dealing with the economic crisis
bulletthe Old Testament kind of description for such times
bulletthe 'equalizing' of the global pot

and asks whether:

bulletwe believe that our current lifestyles are in some way a 'right'?
bulletthe world will act together decisively this time around?
bulletwe can hold fast to God, as "When God comes, it is always on His own terms"?

1) Mountain Rescue chaplain handling crises, and developing national strategies

my photo.jpg

Alan Winfield [pictured left], is chaplain for Derby Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT).

Alan has provided a brief update on how things are with the team and his chaplaincy work:

"Chaplaincy keeping me busy, we have had a couple of fatalities to deal with of late so I have been busy looking after the team members who were involved with the rescue and recovery of the bodies and also touching base withthe families concerned. Last year I attended a TRiM course (Trauma Related Intervention Management) as developed by the RAF for folk returning from such places as Afghanistan etc. but for us to use in Mountain Rescue situations and I am currently one of two Counsellors covering all the teams in England and Wales, and putting together a programme with the view to rolling it out across the country, so it is keeping me busy and out of mischief.

good to hear from you again.

best wishes

Alan Winfield"

We send Alan our good wishes, and thank him for his work and involvement in this vital team of rescuers.

2) Website review -closing in on something vaguely coherent!

The website co-ordinator's report to the Council meeting of 4th October, has progressed since last week.

3) Church and Society Commission (CSC) on family matters, economy crisis, Sunday working

Europe, the Eurozone, and the problems of some national economies and what bail-outs are needed, are ever with us.

With that being so, here is the latest update from the CEC-CSC (Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches) about European matters relating faith and secular life:

CSC_Europe_Update_Nr_37_3_2011.pdf

Their list of topics is lengthy as always. But, one or two catch the eye as interestingly workplace related, such as:

bulletChurches and the economic and financial crisis
bulletSunday protection - forming the European Sunday Alliance

Others may be of interest to you - so have a look!

bullet2) Website review continues - we think!
bullet3) How does 9/11 still affect everyone in workplaces and beyond?

1) What have all these places got in common?

ASDA - Long Eaton                                       ASDA - Sinfin

Chesterfield Courts

                                                   Derby Magistrates Court

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service

                                                                  Derby Theatre

Belper Police

                                                             Long Eaton Police

Police HQ Ripley (+ Dronfield, Swadlincote, and various in Derby City)

                                                           Royal Crown Derby

Robinsons of Chesterfield

Answer:     1) They all have people work there

                 2) The people who work there have the same kinds of life issues and events that any of the rest of us have

                 3) They have no chaplain to talk with!

Those of you who do have to access to chaplains will know how important that last point is. Think of your work colleagues and the things they like or need to share with you, and then spare a thought for those with no-one like you, or their local chaplain, to turn to. How will we get the workplaces and their people covered in this way? By praying, and then by wondering who might be called to do it. But watch out - praying such things can be dangerous for your own comfort!

This is an attempt an a up-to-date list of chaplaincy vacancies:

But it is only as good as the minute we are notified of something. Please let us know the situation on the ground near you. Thanks.

The website co-ordinator's report is still in draft just now, but is still worth releasing for you to read and form your responses. It will be improved in time for the Council meeting on 4th October, and there are still other points to go in it. But, go on - have a read, and help us out if something hits you!

3) How does 9/11 still affect everyone in workplaces and beyond?

“How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?”
(Psalm 137)

9/11 has just been remembered for the passing of 10 years. Industrial Christian Fellowship (ICF), Vice-chair, rev'd Phil Jump [pictured right], has written a thought on the original tragedy, on the intervening years, and on the world as we know it now (or don't know it even).

In this article he:

bulletcelebrates the USA electing its first black President and the Arab Spring progress and hopes
bulletdiscusses the uncertainty in economics that makes this a 'strange land'
bulletnotes the collapse of certainty now and when Jerusalem fell in 539BC
bulletcompares rejoicing over Bin Laden's death with the message of meekness in the Beatitudes

2) Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire - Putting the name change into effect

From Thursday 1st September, we are the Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD). The name Industrial Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (IMD) ceases to exist as a current term on 31st August 2011.

As far as the website goes, we are changing the names and terms to reflect the new identity, and this is being done wherever pages and items are intended to be read as currently applying.

Articles and items written before 31st August 2011 will, in many cases, continue to refer to the names that were in use at the time that the authors were writing.

Please continue to bear with us. if you see anywhere on the website that makes old references and should be changed, then mail in and tell us! Thanks.

Don't forget to have your say on the website review currently going on. Go to:

Website Review August 2011

or scroll down to The name change is upon us! Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire to continue and carry IMDs work into the future

Progress so far with name alterations:

1 >> ABOUT WCD and it's subsidiary pages have all been updated to reflect the new terms.

2 >> CHAPLAINCY SECTORS page has been altered to reference WCD. The subsidiary pages are largely unaffected by the name change, and any quoted items that do refer to IMD continue to do so, as they were written by the chaplains at those times. Small changes have been made to COURTS (where the chaplain is also Chair of WCD) and POLICE pages.

3 >> On DIARY OF EVENTS 2011 page, forthcoming events now refer to WCD.

4 >> The ABOUT THIS SITE page has had its various disclaimers brought into the new terms.

There are still a few more pages to go to complete the transition!

[This item is placed on the ABOUT THIS SITE page.]

3) Doing a bit of archiving!

The name change has prompted some archiving to be done - at last! The 9 months from October 2010 to June 2011 have now been archived and can be accessed through UPDATES HISTORY. (No, it's not as bad as the picture suggests!)

It's quite amazing, looking through them, the range and depth of topics covered and posted in the Homepage updates over time!

The updates history is a chronological record. If you are searching for a particular item or topic or person, then follow the links at the top of this page, where all the update items should also be located, except where superseded or out of date.

1) The name change is upon us! Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire to continue and carry IMD's work into the future

From Thursday 1st September, the Industrial Mission in Derbyshire (IMD) is changing its name to Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD). So this is the last update from IMD! The next update will be on behalf of WCD, and will aim to reflect the name change, as will continuing to provide readers with news about workplace chaplaincy and items relating faith and workplaces.

Website Review commenced.           With the name change needing to be put into effect through all of IMD communications, it was decided that the website should be reviewed more generally. So - your views are being sought and will give us a valuable perspective on where the website should go from here.

Your reviews, please, whether good or bad!               We need to know your view on how to change and improve things. We also need to know your views about what you like. If the review comments focus only on necessary changes, then the good things, the things that bring you to click here, might disappear for want of our knowing that. Please contribute to this debate, as it is the opportunity to set the course for the years ahead.

2) Rolls-Royce chaplains letter for August: Prayers for our time, as laid down by the Lord Himself.

Miles Mitson, chaplain for Rolls-Royce Derby sites (along with Nigel Selby), has written the chaplains letter for August. As is expected at this time, Miles has come with thoughts on what is wrong with society and to offer the stark choice of our time: return to God, or follow human wisdom and see where it gets you.

Miles invites us to explore with him:

bullet What is the 'gap' and what is the 'wall' in our present time?
bullet "What our nation really needs is total spiritual reconstruction."
bullet How the Lord's Prayer has 2 parts and 3 petitions in each part.
bullet Using James to back what Jesus and Paul ask us to do!
bullet Prayers for the good of the family.

3) Bombardier chaplain writes on current developments and how people are being impacted

In the same week that the Prime Minister stated that there could be no revisiting of the decision to award the Thameslink contract to German manufacturers................

Bombardier chaplain, Canon Ian Winterbottom [pictured left], has written about the situation there for the Cathedral Magazine. In it he states loud and clear his dismay and opposition to the loss of the Thameslink order and what it means for local workers and the UK train building industry.

Here are some snippets from Ian's article:

bullet

1) "If the contract with Siemens is eventually signed in the Autumn, it will most likely bring about the closure of the Litchurch Lane site – the end of 140 years of train building in Derby......"

Putting the Thameslink contract decision in stark perspective.

bullet 2) "The counter-claim is that no account was taken of the local socio-economic impact of the decision."

Should social and economic costs have been included in the bidding process?

bullet 3) "I visit most Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 11.30 and 2.30, covering the daytime shift change, ..."

Ian should also add that he visits the IMD office and keeps us fully informed!

bullet 4) "I could not have faced anyone – management and unions alike – had I not taken part in the Rally on the 23rd.July when several thousands processed........."

Absolutely right, so say all of us! See 29th July update for write-up and pictures of the rally - "By Christ, we will!"

bullet 5) "The churches were well represented, but sadly not on the platform. "

Well, why not, we all want to know?

bullet 6) "Is there a level playing field, considering the difficulty Britain has – because of our restricted loading gauge- in competing for continental orders?"

Ian spells out the technical and political difficulties of Bombardier's international bidding.

bullet

7) ".....financial, property, retail and service industries which dominate the capital but actually create –as we are now painfully discovering - only the fragile illusion of wealth, prosperity and well-being."

Are service industries ever a good substitute for making things?

bullet

8) "hoping to beat the glut of applicants in the market with similar skills and experience as the plant runs down."

The pressures upon employees to get work, and when to make the move.

bullet

".....Derby will follow the likes of Swindon, Darlington, Doncaster and Ashford into railway history.  The fight goes on!"

 The fight goes on, indeed.

Chaplain urges fight to continue

4) Connecting with Culture - commentaries from LICC on workplace topics, riots and Harry Potter!

Here are some topics from London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC) in their 'Connecting with Culture' series.

licc

They publish a lot of thought about work and workers and workplaces in this series. Their recent offerings include topics ranging from Harry Potter to street riots, and from information and gossip to empires:

bullet

19Au11 >> LICC - Issues of Justice "Often our difficulties with justice arise from not quite knowing where and how far to allow love and mercy to guide our dealings with each other," Is there time and space for proper justice and mercy when dealing with massed ranks of rioters and looters?

bullet

12Au11 >> LICC - Panic "'On the day that your mentality......  Decides to try to catch up with your biology...'" Morrisey song words and the question of identity - in the wake of the riots and looting.

bullet

5Au11 >> LICC - Decline and Fall "Why? Why do all empires seem doomed to fail? " Taking Rome's fall and applying it first to Murdoch then to civilisation as we know it!

bullet

back to 26th August update

Last update, August 12th (new prayers, 3 new specific items, plus updates on 3 regular featured inputs):

This update contains the following items:

bullet1) The name change is coming! Have your say on the future
bullet2) Follow the road - to the sights of Beeston and displays of chaplains
bullet3) Anyone for industrial mission training - in Linz for the fortunate ones!

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 5th August update

1) The name change is coming! Have your say on the future

Name change and timing.                 Yes, Industrial Mission in Derbyshire (IMD) is to become Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD), with effect from 1st September 2011. The change was agreed at the AGM on May 22nd, and been progressed since then, with ratifications from Church denominational organisations being sought and obtained.

2) Follow the road - to the sights of Beeston and displays of chaplains

The IMD roadshow will be going to the next Methodist District Synod on 10th September at the Chilwell Road Church in Beeston [pictured right, from their own website].C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\IMD work\conferences and events\Methodist Synod Ap11\IMD Synod April 2011\100_0642.JPG

By the time this event happens we will officially be Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD), and it is anticipated that the display boards will show this.

But - we could do assistance, particularly from practicing or experienced chaplains. For chaplaincy work to be 'sold' to delegates, we need people with practical experience to talk about it, so that the message and invitations to others to join in will be well conveyed. Please get in touch: imd002@googlemail.com if you can spare a little time on that day to further God's work in the chaplaincy sphere of activity.

On NEWS AND EVENTS page there are pictures and write-ups of various past events and the people who have generously assisted at the time. See for example, this one from 2 years ago:

3) Anyone for industrial mission training - in Linz for the fortunate ones!

IMD's former principal workplace chaplain, Rev'd Canon Ian Winterbottom [pictured left], is still very active! Most notably, he has picked up and run with the Bombardier chaplaincy at this cricitical time for them.

For the last couple of years Ian has led the European Contact Group, a Europe-wide body covering matters like workplace mission. He has notified us of a training opportunity in Linz, Austria [pictured right, from Ian's report of an Exec meeting held there]. Ian writes:

"Hi, I'm just passing on this final notice of the European Contact Group's international training course for those involved in industrial mission, community action or similar local activity in the public sphere. Please feel free to circulate this noticer to any who may be interested. Yoy may get in touch with me if you wish.

Best wishes

Ian."

1) The Old Testament is everywhere around us - Rolls-Royce chaplains July letter

The latest letter from Nigel and Miles, the Rolls-Royce chaplains, arrived a few weeks ago. We have great pleasure in releasing it for viewing and commend it to you.

Miles is again looking at the Bible, with his focus on the Old Testament. Have you ever thought:

bulletWhy do we need the OT?
bulletHow many centuries was it the making?
bulletHow much we owe to "a Tribe of Desert Nomads"? The list Miles gives starts with the abolitionist movement and covers many more historical actions.
bulletThe extent to which everyday language comes from the OT - plenty of examples here!
bulletWhat does Miles cite as the most important reason to read the OT?

The letter is sent in pdf form this time, and has been provided in 2 parts, which read from one to the other:

RR Chaplains jy11 letter pt1.pdf

When sending this letter, chaplain Nigel wrote some prayer requests, which are included in the IMD weekly prayer guide for          July 22nd 2011 prayers

3) LICC Founder and President called home

Dr John Stott, Founder and president of London Institute for Contemporary Christianity, and well-known to many people, died on July 27th, at the age of 89 or 90 (1921-2011). He has been a famous name in Christian circles for many years, and his ministry has been wide and deep.

The connection of faith and work was part of his belief in Christianity for all of life. The LICC obituary notice cites that:

"He saw the urgent need to enable Christians to integrate their faith with their whole life - at work as well as in the neighbourhood, in the lecture theatre as well as in the sanctuary."

See full tribute from LICC current Director, Mark Greene:

LICC tributes to John Stott

We are grateful to LICC for continuing to provide many useful materials on matters of faith and work, covering a range of topics including workplace Christian witness and Chaplaincy. Their 'Word for the Week' has been featured weekly on this website since April 2010, and many other useful contributions have been worth offering to our readers through this page.

We at IMD send our good wishes to John's family and to his many friends and colleagues at LICC.

** 2) Message of support from Methodist Chair **

Rev'd Loraine Mellor, Chair of Nottingham and Derby District for the Methodist Church [pictured right], rang Moira to say that she couldn't get along to the rally, but sends the following message of support:

"In already hard times, the news of the imminent loss of such a large number of jobs at Bombardier and also its suppliers is a massive blow to our community and we share in the distress and concerns that this announcement has caused. It’s unclear how this will impact our local economy, but we know that for many people this news is disastrous. The Methodist Church remains committed to loving, sharing with and supporting this community come what may and despite these circumstances, we will look to the future with hope.”

1) Thanks expressed for work of retiring IMD Principal Chaplain

IMD's Principal Workplace Chaplain for the last 3 years (2008-11), Rev'd Harold Dobbin [pictured on the right of this photo taken with his predecessor], has announced his retirement from the position. He took on the role and work in the summer of 2008, "as a retirement ministry" (his words), following the end of his life as a parish vicar.

At that time, the previous Principal Chaplain was retiring from the post, and Harold stepped in to take the work on and progress it from there. We are grateful to him for the 3 years in post and the work he has got through and things accomplished.

IMD Administrator, Phil Johnson, has written in the following terms to the chaplains and IMD Council members and supporting organisations, to express IMD's thanks to Harold:

Thanks for Principal Chaplain

Harold, if you are reading this, we all wish you and family much blessing in the times ahead and for whoever and whatever you are involved with.

4) Money and Morality - do they co-exist? Can they ever be brought together?

ICF Vice-Chair, Rev'd Phil Jump [pictured right] (yes, the same one who appeared on the Ceefax pages last week!) is increasingly active in writing about current matters affecting workplaces. In the wake of the last edition of the News of the World, he writes of the phone tapping issues that have brought this about.

ICF phone tapping.pdfSigns displaying the names of the newspapers at The News International Plant are displayed at Wapping on July 9, 2009 in London. The Metropolitan Police are to investigate the News of The World newspaper over claims that thousands of celebrities and politicians mobile phones were hacked into.

His article raises some interesting questions. Try some of these:

bulletIs there anywhere that is scandal free?
bulletIs law the way to do morality?
bulletHow does your company rate morals alongside productivity?
bulletAre the readers the real backers of newspaper practices?
bulletCan Christians manage to stay from being affected by these issues?
bulletIsn't Inreach the best way of engagement?
bulletDo our Churches take faith and work seriously enough?

In ICF article on phone-tapping - Issues and Questions, there is greater flesh put on the above questions, referencing statements from Phil Jump's article. Please join in the debate! Email us at:

with your contributions. Everyone has a view or perspective that is helpful for us all to find common cause!

bullet3) Connecting with Culture - commentaries from LICC on workplace matters and current events
bullet4) Chaplaincy across Europe - how does it compare?

1) Bombardier - chaplain writes for IMD Annual Report - before the lost order

Following on from highlighting the Chairman's section of the IMD Annual Report (click The Annual Report hits the streets! to access copy of full report), this week we start to pick out sections of it to draw attention to.

With recent local news stories in mind, it seems like there can only be one place to begin.

The Bombardier works chaplain's words for the Annual Report:

Annual Report - Bombardier

were written before the announcement that the Thameslink order had gone to Siemens instead of coming to Bombardier in Derby. In there, he notes:

bulletthat over 2000 people are employed there
bulletthe difference a dog collar makes when on site!
bulletthe extent of Bombardier's current orders for this year
bulletthe need to constantly seek fresh orders to maintain the business
bullethow long Bombardier's output of trains would stretch, as well who they are for

The final sentence of the report reads:

"Whilst production is currently at a peak, all but the SubSurface Lines contract will be complete by the year end and so Bombardier is seeking to secure additional work for the site and is eagerly awaiting announcements to be made about key UK rail projects."

The 'eagerly awaiting' turned to disappointment, in the wake of which Bombardier has started to talk of job losses. We must pray for all involved at this site.

IMD people have been asked to comment on this situation, as have Churches and other local people and organisations. To begin with, we refer you to PRAYER TOPICS where you may find pointers to aid in prayer.

3) Connecting with Culture - commentaries from LICC on workplace matters and current events

As we've said before, London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC) are always sending stuff to us, so they get published!licc

They issue publish a lot of thought about work and workers and workplaces, usually in the 'Connecting with Culture' series. Their recent offerings includes such juicy topics as teachers on strike, political Archbishops, and a moral company:

bullet

1Jy11 >> LICC - Teachers have a duty of care................. ranging from an 'imposing headline in the Daily Mail through to St Paul's call to "consider the interests of others more important than our own" and what this might mean for teachers, unions and Government.

bullet

17Jn11 >> LICC - Turbulent Priests "Whether or not British politicians 'do God', the Archbishop of Canterbury certainly does politics" So which book has made the biggest contribution to British politics and why?

bullet

10Jn11 >> LICC - People, Principles, and Profits a real heart-warming story of how one company (which one?) appears to do business properly, its CEO arguing for "a 'healthy' return and 'sustainable' financial growth" and fulfilling "what is expected of them by the communities in which they operate"

bullet

3Jn11 >> LICC - Last Night a Video Game Saved my Life.doc covering statistics about how much time is spent 'gaming' on computers, this paints a picture of how these games have reshaped reality, and thereby provided a more attractive alternative to Church. "Life, and life to the full, can now be found online with a tribe of friends, tearing down evil empires and constructing fantastical avatars. In reality, however, the church surely has something even better to offer...    Doesn't it?"

[These items are also placed on the RESOURCES page, where there is lots of material available to browse.]

back to 8th July update

4) Chaplaincy across Europe - how does it compare?

Chaplaincy is a long established tradition in Great Britain. But is it as well developed and operational elsewhere in Europe? [Have a quick think what you would say the answer is before checking it out!]

IMD's former Principal Chaplain, Rev'd Ian Winterbottom, [pictured left, left] is a leading figure in developing chaplaincy around Europe.

He has provided us with a grid showing 47 European countries and 20 types of chaplaincy. So if you've ever wondered:

bulletwhich country has the most types of chaplaincy
bulletwhether there are any chaplaincy 'deserts' (no provision) in Europe
bulletwhich is the most popular chaplaincy around the continent
bulletwhat Latvia has the Lithuania doesn't!

then the answers, and many more that you're asking, can be spotted on the grid at:

bullet1) IMD Chairman reports good news and offers comparison of chaplains ministry with that of Christ
bullet2) You have got to read this!
bullet3) Health and Safety - a good thing or not? Reviewing IMAgenda magazine articles

For the previous full update (showing latest and regular features), go to 24th June update

1) IMD Chairman reports good news and offers comparison of chaplains ministry with that of Christ

In our first highlighting from this year's Annual report 2010 - A5, pride of place must go to the Chairman's notes at the beginning. Here he tells of the positive and encouraging news:

bulleta significant growth in the number of chaplains operating in the county
bulletexchanging notes with a lead chaplain from a neighbouring area
bulletnumber of IMD supported chaplains is far higher than in most other areas
bullethow the workplace can be fulfilling - or it can be diminishing
bullethow chaplains bring a different perspective to encounters with people

The IMD Chairman, Very Rev'd Dr John Davies, Dean of Derby Cathedral (pictured right), writRev Dr John Davieses this section about Christ's ministry as shown in the Gospels:

"Christ’s ministry was sometimes directed to great crowds, and sometimes aimed at corrupt systems of religion or governance.  But he also dealt with many individuals, the great majority being people whom the systems of the day had ground down or excluded.  He valued them, made them the focus of his attention, and gave them new identities and insights."

This is what chaplains aspire to do in their workplaces. Read full text of John's notes at:

2) You have got to read this!

ICF (Industrial Christian Fellowship) Vice-Chair, Phil Jump, isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last - but his contribution to the issues of the world economies and where we could all be heading, takes some beating!

It is an important contribution for all who attend or minister in workplaces, for all of us are affected by what is being done, often supposedly in our name.

Here are just a few lines from the article that the Greek financial crisis prompted him to write (our hightlighting):

bullet

"For as long as I can remember, there have always been some who have pursued the theological argument that any coming together of European States represented a form of apocalyptic alliance that would attract Divine reaction."

bullet

"Taken at its most literal, we might argue therefore that distinct nationhood is part of the Divine order, and is not something that we should seek to overcome through diminishing it to a state within a centrally controlled and regulated Union."

bullet

"We might be tempted to argue therefore that the eventual collapse of the Eurozone is both inevitable and Divinely decreed. This may or may not be true, but either way this is no time for callous indifference, which sadly such ideas often seem to spawn."

bullet

"It is a similar lack of realism that I see all too often displayed by the British electorate – whatever system we might devise, politicians are put in place by popular consent, and from this basis we seem to assume that
this gives us a right to expect that they only do what is popular."

bullet

"The lessons of Babel are not that a sense of common humanity is intrinsically wrong but that this needs to be expressed through shared responsibility for each other’s well-being, and not simply by being driven to build ever increasing epitaphs to our own sense of self importance. Events in Greece and the shadows which they cast over the economies of all the European nations, might indicate that this is a reality that we will sooner or later be forced to embrace."

3) Health and Safety - a good thing or not? Reviewing IMAgenda magazine articles

At last, you say, a review of IMAgenda magazine. Those who are affiliated to Industrial Mission Association (IMA) get the magazine sent in the post every 2 months. If you are so lucky, then you won't be able to read in until they put it on their website, perhaps a year or so later.Industial Mission

The May and June edition of IMAgenda focuses on Health and Safety in the Workplace. H&S means many things to many people. It’s one of those ideas and practices that into the time-honoured cliché – you either love it or you hate it!

There are various contribution and the review can be read in full at:

IMAgenda on Health and Safety My,Jn11

Here are a few interesting questions that arise:

bulletWhere does responsibility for Health and Safety really lie - see Rosa's editorial
bulletWhat does a Cherry Blossom Festival signify? - GKN chaplain
bulletAre there no bad H&S rules, only bad H&S professionals? - H&SE manager
bulletWill the cut in H&SE budget lead to serious conseqences? - H&S Birmingham Airport
bulletWhich industry is the most dangerous and why? - agricultural chaplain

Industrial Mission in Derbyshire

IMD is a Local Ecumenical Partnership, sponsored by Churches Together in Derbyshire to carry forward the ministry of the Church in relation to Work and the Workplace.

It is the body responsible for accrediting clergy and authorised laity, on behalf of the Bishop and Church Leaders, to visit and minister to individual workplaces. Appointments are made in conjunction with employers.

The Partnership is also engaged in helping local churches make the link between faith and work.

The  IMD website is currently in its infancy and is being developed as a source of information and communication for workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire.  Please bear with us while it is developed.

The IMD website has had an update, taking in new information and discarding old stuff where appropriate. It is far from perfect, but is being released in order that viewers can look and advise us where changes are still required or improvements needed.

Pages that have been updated show a recent date in bottom right corner.

Pages that have yet to be updated say 'not yet updated' in bottom right corner.
