PEOPLE

WCD is a Local Ecumenical Partnership, sponsored by Churches Together in Derbyshire to carry forward the ministry of the Church in relation to Work and the Workplace.

It is the body responsible for accrediting clergy and authorised laity, on behalf of the Bishops and the leadership of the member churches, to visit and minister to individual workplaces. Appointments are made in conjunction with employers.

The Partnership is also engaged in helping local churches make the link between faith and work.

WCD publishes an Annual Report in time for the Annual General Meeting each May. This gives a good overview of what WCD and associated chaplains do and are about.

The 2010-11 Report can be viewed at Annual report 2010 - A5 (in Word form) or at:

WCD Chairman reports good news and offers comparison of chaplains ministry with that of Christ

In our first highlighting from this year's Annual report 2010 - A5, pride of place must go to the Chairman's notes at the beginning. Here he tells of the positive and encouraging news:

bulleta significant growth in the number of chaplains operating in the county
bulletexchanging notes with a lead chaplain from a neighbouring area
bulletnumber of WCD supported chaplains is far higher than in most other areas
bullethow the workplace can be fulfilling - or it can be diminishing
bullethow chaplains bring a different perspective to encounters with people

The WCD Chairman, Very Rev'd Dr John Davies, Dean of Derby Cathedral, writes this section about Christ's ministry as shown in the Gospels:

"Christ’s ministry was sometimes directed to great crowds, and sometimes aimed at corrupt systems of religion or governance.  But he also dealt with many individuals, the great majority being people whom the systems of the day had ground down or excluded.  He valued them, made them the focus of his attention, and gave them new identities and insights."

This is what chaplains aspire to do in their workplaces. Read full text of John's notes at:
