Chaplaincy in the local hospitals has been in existence for some time. The appointment of a chaplain to a medical doctors practice is much newer, and it is hoped that the partnership at Somercotes will become a model for other practices to adopt.

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Chaplaincy in the hospital setting has been around for a long time. Indeed, it was part of the inception of the NHS in 1948.

The Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and the Royal Derby Hospital are served by a team of people, mostly voluntary chaplaincy assistants, headed up by a small group of full-time chaplains.

There is a Faith Centre at the Royal Derby Hospital. There are pictures taken inside which can be viewed at: RDH Faith Centre

Many of the wards and departments moved from the DRI to the Royal Hospital (as the City General is now known,) and the chaplains and chaplaincy assistants, have for the most part moved with their respective wards and departments to the new site. There are some residue services on the DRI site and some chaplains remain there also.

At the present time there are 3 full-time chaplains, and approximately 60 volunteers covering activities such as:

chaplaincy visitors - assigned to wards, available for patients and staff

A&E support team

Eucharistic ministers - taking communion to patients in their own wards

bullet

Chapel assistants - assisting patients to get to Sunday morning in the Chapel.
