Whilst traditional industries are on the wane, there are various new ones arising, as well as some continuing local industrial giants. On this page there are a variety of places to read of chaplaincy work in:

Rolls-Royce plc

Bombardier UK

Airfield Industrial Estate, Ashbourne

Sheepbridge Industrial Estate, Chesterfield

Celanese

Rolls Royce plc

Rolls-Royce plc has had chaplaincy provision for a number of years. Miles Mitson and Nigel Selby are the currently serving chaplains for the RR Derby sites. They have produced a PowerPoint presentation for RR employees, which can be accessed via the following link:

Chaplains and Rolls-Royce Christian Fellowships

The chaplains meet regularly with the RR Christian Fellowship groups, as well as individual contact with many people across the sites. They have provided a list of CF groups around the Derby and Bristol sites. Click on RR Christian Fellowship Groups. They have asked if anyone knows of groups meeting at the Sunderland, Inchinnan,
Hucknall, Barnoldswick sites.

Chaplaincy in Rolls-Royce sites across the land

Nigel and Miles are keen to promote and establish chaplaincy in the RR sites in different parts of Britain.

There is a regular monthly chaplains newsletter. They are listed here in date order, with most recent first.

Peace or war - we can't choose but God is sovereign - Rolls-Royce chaplains letter for November

Rolls-Royce chaplain Nigel Selby [on right of picture] has forwarded another chaplains newsletter. it is once more written by his fellow-chaplain, Miles Mitson [on left].

Nigel introduces Miles' letter with these words:

"Hi everyone, we are looking at the whole issue of peace this month.  I’m grateful to miles for his thoughts which you will find in the attached file.  I have spoken to a number of folk recently whose work is not easy because of the commitment that are required of them.  Miles gives us a opportunity to remember our real source of peace in all circumstances."

This must be the week for being reminded of the constancy of warfare, conflict and stress in life, and that God doesn't necessarily take it away but remains in control throughout. [See Christians at work E-Bulletin, below, for more on this subject.]

Bombardier UK

Rev'd Ian Winterbottom [pictured right] is chaplain for the Bombardier site in Derby as of July 2011.

Update 30 September 2011

Church support recognised by Bombardier MD + Rail Magazine and Facebook pictures

1) MD thanks Churches for support.

The future of the Bombardier works continues to be at the top of our concerns, when it comes to jobs and livelihoods of local people in Derby and Derbyshire.

Chaplain Ian [pictured left] continues to do a great job, visiting the site, talking with workers, attending meetings - and speaking at campaign gatherings, as he did at Landau Forte on 1st September.

[And he calls in to the office to keep us posted! Thanks, Ian.]

Ian writes:

"Hi all - It was very good that Colin Walton recognised the churches' contribution at Litchurch on Friday. I 've attached the latest thoughts on the situation from the railway press. I think it's good common sense and realistic.

Best wishes
Ian"

The above reference about MD Colin Walton [pictured left] recognising the Church's contribution, refers to the visit to Derby of the Archbishop of Canterbury [pictured right], when Colin had chance to speak to him. He is particularly grateful to Ian for getting stuck in at the works.

2) Rail Magazine article on Bombardier.

Ian's reference to the railway press is another article from Nigel Harris in the Rail Magazine. See 29th July update for his previous article about Bombardier, and a bit about the man himself. His latest offering is in the form of .jpg file, and can be made available on request.

Ian sums up the situation in terms of saying that the Thameslink order has gone, so move on and look for orders elsewhere. In that field, it is suggested that the noises made over the Thameslink deal have had some effect, in that Ministers are likely to look more keenly at how future contracts are ordered.

That's why we did it! Let's keep up the active support for this local workforce.

3) Facebook pictures of Bombardier rally in July

Rev'd Michael Futers has written:

"Paul

There’s also an album of pictures of the Bombardier march and rally on my Facebook page.  Look under Michael Futers, it’s open access.

Michael"

We apologise to Michael for taking so long to report his offering. Enjoy the pictures.

Airfield Industrial Estate, Ashbourne

Sheepbridge Industrial Estate, Chesterfield

Again from the Annual Report;_ 'Michael Hughes continues at Sheepbridge Industrial Estate, where relating to small businesses presents a very different dimension in terms of access and befriending.'

Celanese

Rev'd Frances Blood is the chaplain.
