"So how was the Celebration for
yo
u?"
The IMD AGM and service of celebration took place on Sunday 22nd May 2011 at
Derby Cathedral. The Annual Report and Accounts were accepted, and the proposed
name change agreed unanimously. (More on the name change once it
is ratified by those who ratification is now being sought.)

The preacher at the celebration service was Rev'd Loraine Mellor, Chair of
Nottingham and Derby Methodist District. Loraine rounded off her address with
the following 10 sayings relating to chaplaincy work:
The foundation
of chaplaincy is character.
The nature of chaplaincy is service.
The motive for chaplaincy is love.
The measure of chaplaincy is sacrifice.
The authority of chaplaincy is submission.
The purpose of chaplaincy is the glory of God.
The tools of chaplaincy are the Word and prayer.
The privilege of chaplaincy is growth.
The power of chaplaincy is the Holy Spirit.
The model for chaplaincy is Jesus Christ.
We are grateful to Loraine and thank her for coming along to bring God's word to
this occasion.
Impressions and Responses about the AGM and Celebration.
So far one response has been received. It is reproduced here:
"The experiment of working the AGM with a service of thanksgiving seemed to work
well - and it appeared that more people attended
In the end, after waiting a while the actual AGM only took about 10 minutes
and felt a little flat. The guest speaker at the service was just right -
though I felt the service itself could have been a little more ecumenical
inclusive. Least that the way I saw it ."
Do you agree? We're looking for a lot more people to offer your perspectives.

with your thoughts. Thanks.

FAITH and FOOTBALL!
Do they go together, you wonder?
[Perhaps - most especially
when you see the latest m
oment
when one player thumps another discreetly, or does the so-called
'professional' foul, or dives (without contact) to get a penalty or red
card for opponent - you may wonder if these words belong in the same
sentence!]
Obviously they do. God is interested in
everyone and everything and can use everything. Here is a message from the
County Ecumenical Development Officer, Rev'd Philip Webb:
"The Derby Diocese
has been asked to work with Derby County to promote a Faith in Football day
for the match against Reading on 28th November this year. They have been
invited to take up to 500 seats - and then have an event with an
inspirational speaker in the Pedigree Suite afterwards. Revd Andy Hutchinson
(andy_hutchinson@hotmail.com) is organising this event in conjunction with
the football club and will be glad to provide further details.
Attached is a short article about this venture, and here is the youtube
address for an advert for the event

IMD COUNCIL MEETING - MEMORABLE QUOTES!
The Council of Industrial Mission in
Derbyshire (IMD) met last month (Tuesday 29th September) at Ashbourne Road
Church in Derby. Phil Johnson laid on the refreshments in his usual
plentiful and tasty supply.
13 Council members were in attendance. It
was terrific to have representation from Derbyshire Fire&Rescue Service for
the first time (thanks Lyn and Bill), and also from the City Centre Churches
(thanks Paul).
Although it was a business meeting
("therefore, not interesting", I hear you say?) there were some
interestingly memorable quotes that your reporter managed to jot down.
Cohesion and coherence got a mention, and the question "what is a chaplain
for?" was bounced around.

NEXT ENGAGE CONFERENCE - AND 'FUNKE'

the 'DISCUSSION TOPICS' page, as to whether this was the health and wealth
Gospel?
Well......the Engage team (associated with
Nottingham's business community) have started to advertise the next one, at
The Riverside Centre, Derby
on Saturday 10th October.
A copy of the email, giving the details you

METHODIST EVENTS and IMD PRESENCE
The Industrial Mission in Derbyshire wer
e
again invited to recent Methodist Church gatherings, at which we took material to display and hand out, and be on hand to chat to
people.
The picture gallery has been assembled. It
can be found at:
Inauguaration and Synod pictures
Look out for a write-up of the events shortly.
Sunday 30th August 2009, 3:30, was the inaurguaration event for the
new enlarged Methodist Circuit in Derby. This was held at
Queen's Hall, London Road -
which just happens to be where IMD is based!
This was a chance, not only to see the new
circuit come into being, not only to see what IMD is doing, but also to come
to the office itself. Then you'd have known we're real and have a real base!
Saturday 5th September 2009 was the date of the next Methodist
District Synod. This one took place at
Littleover Methodist Church
in Derby.
IMD has been represented at Synod for a
number of years. Remember this one from Nottingham in April?
See
IMD at Methodist Synod for the
write-up of that occasion, where once again there was good representation
from real live chaplains for people to chat with about what they do and why it is important.
The events are now past. Pictures will be posted on the site shortly.

'RELIGION in a SECULAR SOCIETY' -
discussion forum
'Religion in a Secular Society' is an
evening event, on Monday 8th June, sponsored by the Friends of Melbourne
Parish Church. They are bringing together experts from Christian, Muslim and
Jewish traditions, with Professor David Thomas in the chair.
The publicity notes that the secular world
is "difficult terrain for religion" and "religions......find it difficult to
make a contribution to public debate.......without ridicule or resentment"
Have you ever found it hard to bring your
faith to have any impact in our world and communities? Here is a chance to
share the issues and seek encouragement.

IMD AT METHODIST SYNOD
The Industrial Mission in Derbyshire were asked to do a stall at the Methodist Synod in Nottingham on Saturday
25th April 2009.
Once again there was good representation
from real live chaplains for people to chat with about what they do and why it is important.

We arrived at Bluecoat School in the morning
and discovered that a car boot sale was being held at the same time as
Synod! Once we had found out where the Synod was, we unloaded and got set
up, in the 'Marketplace' where half a dozen other organisations were doing
the same as us.
There were some Synod delegates arrived by
this time, and a few wandered into the Marketplace before proceedings began.
While the morning session was in full swing,
we got chance to grab a drink and catch up with each other. We had to be on
our toes, though - as the main leisure seating area was doubling up at
various times as a workshop venue, and eviction was a constant possibility!
When lunchtime arrived the Marketplace was a
thronging hubbub of people. Many passed by and stopped to look at the
material on display and to chat. The volunteers engaged with the delegates,
and had many useful conversations.
There were 2 main themes on offer at the IMD
stall: 1) Chaplaincy; 2) Faith and Work.
The chaplaincy focus was about showing where
chaplains are currently operating and what good work they do, and where
there are places that are in need of people to take on this role.
The Faith and Work focus was about trying to
draw from people their ideas on how faith and work relate to each other.
Someone said: "But we don't work." The reply was "Oh yes, you do! 'Work'
covers volunteers and informal work as well."

Former Principal Chaplain in Austria
The former Principal Workplace Chaplain attached to
IMD, Rev Canon Ian Winterbottom, has been to Austria recently.
Did we want to know that, you ask? Well maybe......

.......if only to wonder what this gathering is about!
The European Contact Group (ECG) is the pan-European
body covering workplace faith and chaplaincy and other projects. Ian is a
member of this body and attended the recent meeting in Linz, Austria.

'On the Buses' - so to
speak
Do you remember those old Reg Varney 'On the Buses' films? When I was a lad
(no, don't ask!) they seemed to be very popular, at least with the
television channel schedulers. Not having anything better to do, during the
proverbial mis-spent youth, I used to watch their antics and roll about
laughing. Why is this relevant? Well, on Monday October 20th, at Ashbourne
Road, buses were very much the theme of the moment. The outgoing IMD
chairman, Rev'd Canon Keith Orford, has spent his working life in the bus
industry.
So when it came to making a presentation to Keith to mark his 11 years in
the IMD chair, Council Member Jean Brocklehurst waxed lyrical about buses.
She described all sorts of variety of buses, relating each one to some
aspect of Keith's life, work or forthcoming retirement!
A card was presented to Keith, which, by coincidence (no collusion
between Jean and Phil, surely?) had pictures of buses strewn all over it!
With refreshments laid on, and a discussion about where things are
heading led by the new chairman, Rev'd Christopher Harrison, a great evening
was enjoyed by the 19 chaplains and Council members present.
The meeting with the Bishop of Repton, planned for 3rd December, has now
been postponed. Sorry. Hope to see you all again soon.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS
There are known to have been 4
carol events that have been held in workplaces and led by the local
chaplains. These were at:
1) At East Midlands Airport on
Saturday 20th December, organised by the East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy
Team (EMACT).
IMD Council Member and EMACT chaplain, Moira Biggins, writes:
"East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team held two
Carol Services on Saturday 20 December, one in the Departure Lounge and
one in the Check-in area.
Music a mixture of classic and contemporary
carols and Christmas songs was provided by the choir of St Winifreds
Catholic Church in Shepshed, and a choir specially formed for the
occasion by staff of the airline bmibaby.
Moira"
Moira has also supplied some pictures of the
occasion:

2) The
Derbyshire Police carol service was held in Derby on Monday 15th December.
Police Chaplain Mair Bradley writes:
"The Derbyshire Constabulary held their Annual Family Carol Service on
Monday 15 December 2008 at St Paul's Church, Mansfield Road, Derby. We were
very pleased that the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire was able to join us. It
was also a pleasure to welcome the Umbrella children again this year; it is
always a delight to have them with us and they take a lot of pleasure in
dressing up as Nativity characters. The Advent candles were lit by two
Umbrella children and two Police family children. A lovely family occasion;
those who were unable to be there missed out.
Kind regards,
Mair"
3) The Nightingale Hall at
Rolls-Royce on Wednesday 17th December, organised by the Chaplains Miles Mitson and Nigel Selby.
4) At Derby station on 2
occasions during that week, organised by the Chaplain James Lindsay, who
writes (on Tuesday 16th):
"Had a fantastic time carolling
at Derby Station today 12-1 with the kind help of YWAM and three instruments. It
was a joy to proclaim the wonderful truths of Christ to staff and customers. God
willing we are doing another stint this Thursday 3-4pm in the atation foyer if
you'd like to join us.
Whatever happens, peace be with
you and your family for Christmas and every blessing for the New Year."
Fire & Rescue HQ
Chaplains Commissioned!
The Chaplains to the Fire & Rescue HQ in Littleover, Derby, Captain Sean
Andrews and Rev. Ian Worrall, have been commissioned for this role. This
took place on Tuesday 27th January at the Community
Fire Station in Alfreton, in the presence of some 50 Fire Officers and
Firefighters, HQ personnel, Clergy, Chaplains other interested people.
The
commissioning of Sean and Andrew was embedded in a ceremony inside the
appliance bay. Lyn Voce from the Service HQ organised the event and opened
proceedings, after which the Derbyshire Chief Fire Officer, Brian Tregunna,
welcomed everyone and spoke of the importance the Service places on its
people.

The Chair of IMD, Rev'd
Christopher Harrison, presided over the commissioning event (photo above).
Rev. Ian Worrall was Commissioned on behalf of the Methodist Church by the
District Chairman, Rev. Wes Blakey. Captains Sean Andrews's commissioning
was carried out by the Bishop of Repton, Humphrey Southern. (l to r, Sean,
Ian, Wes, Chris, Humphrey.)
The Bishop chose as the Scripture reading for
his address, Exodus 3v1-6, the story of Moses and the Burning Bush - a most
appropriate item for a Fire and Rescue Service gathering!
Either side of
the address there was the singing of "Who would true valour see" and "Shine,
Jesus, shine". The Firefighters prayer was offered by a serving officer.

Proceedings were concluded with the
signing of the Chaplaincy Agreement between the Service and IMD and the
chaplains themselves (photo above, l to r, Chief Fire Officer Brian Tregunna,
Captain Sean, Rev. Ian, Rev'd Christopher.)
Refreshments beforehand and
buffet lunch afterwards were warmly received by everyone. Many people took
the opportunity to chat with each other about the occasion and anything else
of interest.
There was also an IMD display to look at.
