Clergy Conference - WCD woz there!

The Diocesan Clergy Conference took place at Swanwick last week. WCD had a stall there, and had chaplains on hand to chat with anyone interested to look.

Our thanks are due to those who 'manned' the stall at various times. You show that chaplains have faces and can communicate what you do and why. Thank you!

We will keep you informed about feedback and any developments from it, as well about future events of this kind.

Follow the road - to the sights of Beeston and displays of chaplains

The IMD roadshow will be going to the next Methodist District Synod on 10th September at the Chilwell Road Church in Beeston [pictured right, from their own website].C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\IMD work\conferences and events\Methodist Synod Ap11\IMD Synod April 2011\100_0642.JPG

By the time this event happens we will officially be Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire (WCD), and it is anticipated that the display boards will show this.

But - we could do assistance, particularly from practicing or experienced chaplains. For chaplaincy work to be 'sold' to delegates, we need people with practical experience to talk about it, so that the message and invitations to others to join in will be well conveyed. Please get in touch: imd002@googlemail.com if you can spare a little time on that day to further God's work in the chaplaincy sphere of activity.

"Come and Join the Celebration............

...............it's a very Special Day,"

You know that song? If you are a regular Church attender, then of course you do - it's been sung among Church congregations and other gatherings for long numbers of years. The reference is to the birth of Jesus - and you can't get more special than that!

But you know what? God's people doing God's work, being His representatives to our world, and meeting together for various reasons, all constitute 'special days' and worthy of celebration - while we can still continue to do and be all of these things.

Why is it special when the Lord's people gather together?-

bullet Special because………………………the Holy Spirit may do dramatic things!
bullet Special because………………………………it is God’s work we celebrate and take forward.
bullet Special because…………………………..God’s people meeting together pleases Him and gives encouragement.
bullet Special because……………………………….we are still here!
bullet Special because………………………….mission in our world matters.

The following is a powerful case for the importance of meeting together and celebrating these different aspects of life and work and each other. Ok, it's a thinly disguised plug for the IMD AGM, but it serves for other parts of life as well. Take the challenge - read it, and see what gatherings the Lord is calling you to be part of and bring your part of Him into!

Come and join the Celebration

Derby County, billiard balls, trains, coffee - where do you get this sort of amazing mix!

bulletWhat is the connection between Derby County Football Club, ASDA in Spondon, and the Bombardier works?
bulletWho said, "Industrial chaplaincy has its surprises..............", and what did he mean?
bulletHow far would Bombardier's monthly output of trains stretch if put end to end?
bulletWhy is Costa Coffee the place to go on 1st Sunday of each month?
bulletWhere have the balls from the toy billiard table gone?

All the answers will be available shortly - for they are all in the IMD Annual Report!

The Annual Report is presented to the AGM, after which it is available for general interest. For details of the AGM, including the celebration service with the Methodist District Chair, click:

So you think AGMs (and workplace mission) are boring!

The Principal Chaplain writes, "In the present economic climate, where all seems doom and gloom and the talk is of cuts and economies, we have in Derbyshire a band of over thirty voluntary chaplains working under the umbrella of IMD. They do not share in this doom and gloom. On the contrary their mood is upbeat and they are full of confidence about this form of ministry."

And also, "In fact the need for chaplains in the workplace is surely greater now than ever."

The Church is struggling to impact upon the lives and communities around us. Workplace mission is fulfilling a vital part of getting the Church to where people are. Are you willing to support us in so doing?

For further information, please contact: imd002@googlemail.com.

Believe in mission? Try the Roadshow!

Saturday 7th May, 2pm to 5pm.

St John's Church, Park Farm, Allestree. [pictured right]

Mission is often reckoned to be at the heart of the life of any Church, being an outworking of worshipping the Lord and Master.

The Derby Circuit of the Methodist Church is holding a Missions Roadshow, whereby Churches can show which mission interests they are involved with.

The event is open to all people (I understand) to come along. A great variety of mission organisations will be on show. For full list click: Circuit Missions Roadshow My11. (Surely, there is something in there to interest most people!)

Our thanks are again due to Rev'd Dr Moira Biggins, chaplain at East Midlands Airport and IMD Council member, for her tireless efforts in getting recognition and exposure for the work of our chaplains in various workplaces. Thank you.

View the travelling circus!

The IMD boards and leaflets were again seen at the Methodist Synod, held last Saturday at Littleover Methodist Church, pictured right.

IMD on the road again!

The next District Synod of the local Methodist Church is taking place soon - 9th April at Littleover Methodist Church (pictured right) - and IMD will have it's display boards and handout material there at the time.

We do need people who have first-hand experience of IMD and/or chaplaincy work to be on hand to speak with Synod delegates.

Can you be one of those wonderful volunteers? If so, then contact us on: imd002@googlemail.com

Here are some of our volunteers at previous Church events:

The Synod takes place on Saturday 9th April 2011 at Littleover Methodist Church in Derby. The principal time for chatting with delegates is over the lunchtime period.

Re-vamped IMD AGM - celebration!

Industrial Mission in Derbyshire is staging a new-look AGM this year. In place of the customary business meeting at Ashbourne Road Church, there is to be a celebration:

place: Derby Cathedral

date: Sunday 22nd May 2011

time: 5:00pmFrom the District Chair

The first part of the occasion will be the AGM elections, appointments, and reports, and this will be followed at 6:00pm by an ecumenical service of thanksgiving/celebration for the work of IMD over the years and into the future.

The Guest Preacher is to be Rev. Loraine Mellor (pictured left), who is the new (September 2010) Chair of the Nottingham and Derby District of the Methodist Church.

Everyone welcome!

However, Phil Johnson would like an idea of approximately how many people are expected. See AGM 2011 invitation - and respond accordingly.

However, again, don't stay away if you find you can make it on the day.

IMD Presentation at Methodist Synod

The next twice-yearly Synod of the Methodist Nottingham and Derby District takes place:

Ashbourne

Saturday 11th September

IMD have been invited to make a short presentation to this event, on the subject of faith and work and chaplaincy.

This is likely to be in addition to the customary stall with handouts and displays.

Volunteers are once again sought for the stall, and one special volunteer will be needed for the presentation. Any takers? See what fun we have!

IMA Conference at Swanwick - delegates responses

As promised, we have available the thoughts of some of the IMD chaplains who attended the Conference at Swanwick in April.

[A scene during one of the session intervals]

The responses of Captain Sean Andrews, Rev. Nigel Bibbings, and Nigel Selby, give variety in what they tell us about the event, and are well worth reading and comparing:

Airport Chaplains meet with each other!

No, not just the East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team (EMACT) who, of course, do meet and know each other well. This is the bi-annual (Spring) conference of British Isles and Eire Airport Chaplains' Network, which is coming to East Midlands Airport this time around.

It is being held on Tuesday 23rd March 2010. It is listed on DIARY OF EVENTS page, where there are lists of other events taking place around Derbyshire.

Please note that this conference is not open for general attendance. Rather it is mentioned here for information about the chaplains and their support network, and for your prayer support for them.

To learn more about the airport chaplaincy, click: TRANSPORT and follow link to the airport section.

REMEMBERING the FALLEN

The Railway Chaplain for the East Midlands, James Lindsay, has led staff and visitors in remembering the sacrifices of railway personnel in the World Wars of the 20th Century.

James writes: "Remembrance Service – It was a privilege to conduct a very well attended service once again at Derby Station. About 65 people gathered by the memorial plaques on platform 1 to pay their respects, to be led in prayer and to hear scriptures of hope. A British Transport Police officer dutifully played his cornet for us and East Midlands Trains kindly provided refreshments in the first class lounge afterwards. It was a very moving and meaningful event."

There is an article about the event in the Belper Newspaper at:

to see what is meant by 'precarious work'.

This is an invitation to a workshop on this topic, to be held in Linz, Austria, in March 2010.

The European Contact Group (ECG) are arranging this. They cite:

bullet

employment contracts

bullet

temporary and part-time

bullet

regulated hours

bullet

reliable income

as being characteristics distinguishing work as precarious. They are calling for local workers, community workers, trade union workers, etc. who are at the sharp end of dealing with these issues to participate in this workshop.

ANYONE for a TRIP to FINLAND?

Our man at ECG (see OTHER ORGANISATIONS for info on ECG) has advised us that the Finnish industrial mission organisation are looking for someone to speak about changes in worklife, to a seminar they holding in January. See mail message:

Dear Ian,

In IM work in Finland we are dealing/working with the good change of the work life. We have made some criteria for them and made a leaflet in order to wake up discussion. The idea is, that chaplains take the leaflet with them when they visit workplaces and use them as starters in discussions.

We will arrange a seminar about this issues on Jan 14. 2010. The discussion themes will be 1) which changes are happening in the worklife, 2) ethical perspective for that and 3) how to take the subject up in IM-work.

Now I wonder, if you in UK have further experiences of the different changes in the worklife. Could somebody from you come to Finland for 14.1.2010 seminar, and tell your experiences?

If you would like to be that person, then please contact us at mailto:imd02@queenshall.plus.com and we will pass this to Ian. Needs to be quick, though!

FLOURISHING TOGETHER - at EXPO 2009

The East Midlands Churches Forum are putting on this event at the East Midlands EXPO 2009.

This is short notice as the event is on this coming Thursday, 8th October, at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester.

The theme is based on the economic assumptions that have led us astray in our present time, with the challenges to make something more sustainable and more contributable to human happiness.

There will be exhibitions, demonstrations, seminars, workshops and all sorts! More details can be found at: Churches Forum - EXPO 2009 (a reproduced mail message - please request original from IMD office)

The flyer: Flourishing_Together tells you a quick summary, and who should attend, and how to get to it.

Prospective IMA Conference on Work, Values, and Spirituality

East Midlands region of the Industrial Mission Association (IMA) (to which all IMD chaplains are affilliated) is hoping to put on a conference next spring.

This is in response to the growing consideration of faith and work among all denominations of the Christian body.

The conference is likely to be aimed at voluntary chaplains. The local IMA people are looking to see what level of interest and support there might be. Please signify if this is something you would like to see happen mailto:imd02@queenshall.plus.com

EMACT IS 10!

The East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team (EMACT) celebrate 10 years of ministering among staff and passengers in a busy transport hub.

The actual anniversary event took place on Friday 19th June in the prayer room at the airport. A good number of chaplains, airport staff, guests, dignitaries were present for an act of thanksgiving and re-committment, followed by a wondrous buffet.

To view the report and pictures of this event, and learn more about EMACT and the work they do at the airport can be viewed at TRANSPORT.

ALPHA at BOMBARDIER

An Alpha in the Workplace gathering is to take place at the Bombardier site in Derby. This is being organised by the Christians who work at the site, and who meet regularly for prayer and fellowship.

This meeting is in Friday 24th April. The team ask for prayer for this event. They hope to see a good response to invitations distributed among colleagues and around the site.

At present there is a vacancy for a chaplain for the Bombardier works. The East Midlands Railways chaplain, James Lindsay, keeps contact with those who work there.

Farewell to a great servant of IMD - but maybe not for long?

The late, great, Principal Workplace Chaplain, Rev'd Canon Ian Winterbottom, retired after 8 years full-time in post. In grateful thanks and recognition, a service was held in Derby Cathedral on Friday 6th June. The address was given by the Chair of IMD, Rev'd Canon Keith Orford. The text of Keith's speech can be found in the following link:

Ian Winterbottom farewell address

Ian had said at the time "give me 6 months off". Well, Ian, that 6 months is nearly over!

Further note: Ian called in at the office this week. Welcome back!

IMD CHAIR TAKES UP NEW POST

The former Chair of IMD, Rev'd Christopher Harrison, has take up a post in the Nottingham diocese. One of his tasks in the new job will be to chair Nottingham's committee that covers Industrial Mission. We may well be in touch!

We all wish Chris well in his new post, and thank him for his contribution to the work and progress of IMD.

Launch of God At Work course - report

"We think this could be an extremely influential and beneficial course for all Christians in work" is a line from the email invitation (below) to a launch at the County Hall in Rushcliffe on Monday 9th February.

Text Box:

So I went along to find out! They weren't actually launching a course that night. Rather, being from the same stable as the Alpha course, this was a promotion of a course similar to Alpha, in which people can consider the big questions of living in today's world.

Ken Costa (author of the book of the same name) was in town to address a good number of Christian and business leaders. He had a lot so say about the current economic times.

The course is aimed for local organisation and take-up - just like the original Alpha. Click on the link for a longer report on the event: Report on God At Work Course Launch

The advertising for the course can be found in the following links: God At Work course, and flyer God At Work flyer

Liberating lay people for mission in the world of work

- reappraising the role of church leaders,

chaplains and sector ministers

Wednesday 25th March 2009, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm

Some key issues this day will be addressing:

What is the meaning and nature of ‘mission’ in the world of work?

How can lay people be supported and equipped for mission at work?

In what ways will the role of church leaders need to change to give primacy to lay people in this sphere of mission?

Cost is £16 including lunch and refreshments.

SACRIFICE REMEMBERED

On the 90th anniversary of the World War I Armistice, I took the short walk from the Queen's Hall office to platform 1 at Derby Midland Station. There, starting 10:45, was a short Act of Remembrance led by the Railway Chaplain, James Lindsay.

Just before the 11th hour arrived, there was the reading of names of fallen comrades who had been employed in the railway industry. James read out 11 individual names, each of whom were placed in the context of a larger section of the railway industry with the numbers of dead colleagues added in. After each individual name and place was read, we responded with the words 'We will remember them' and a Scripture reading was added. Very poignant for all who were there.

I'd never before been up that end of platform 1 to see the list of names recorded permanently there. I made a note to go back and read it properly.

From India to mothers, from books to jewellery - WCD displays to be set amidst a range of other activities

The WCD stall, displays, and handouts are taking to the road again. The Derby Diocesan Clergy Conference is taking place over 3 days from Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd November, once again at Hayes Centre, Swanwick [pictured left].

First of all, please pray, that our presence will be useful in:

bulletletting people know that WCD exists and what we do
bulletindicating what we believe in and where we want to make progress
bulletmaking contacts who may be able to help in supporting or promoting the work
bullethaving the Church accepting that faith and work matters
bulletgetting individuals interested in considering having a go at chaplaincy work

There are a range of different interests on display, from India to mothers, and from books to jewellery. Click Exhibitors for Derby Clergy Conference Nr11 for full range.

Note - the Conference is not open for just 'turning up'. If you wish to participate as part of the WCD display and connecting with delegates, then we would love to hear from you: imd002@googlemail.com. You would then be able to look at the other stalls while there.

"So how was the Celebration for you?"

The IMD AGM and service of celebration took place on Sunday 22nd May 2011 at Derby Cathedral. The Annual Report and Accounts were accepted, and the proposed name change agreed unanimously. (More on the name change once it is ratified by those who ratification is now being sought.)

From the District Chair

The preacher at the celebration service was Rev'd Loraine Mellor, Chair of Nottingham and Derby Methodist District. Loraine rounded off her address with the following 10 sayings relating to chaplaincy work:

The foundation of chaplaincy is character.

The nature of chaplaincy is service.

The motive for chaplaincy is love.

The measure of chaplaincy is sacrifice.

The authority of chaplaincy is submission.

The purpose of chaplaincy is the glory of God.

The tools of chaplaincy are the Word and prayer.

The privilege of chaplaincy is growth.

The power of chaplaincy is the Holy Spirit.

The model for chaplaincy is Jesus Christ.

We are grateful to Loraine and thank her for coming along to bring God's word to this occasion.

Impressions and Responses about the AGM and Celebration.

So far one response has been received. It is reproduced here:

"The experiment of working the AGM with a service of thanksgiving seemed to work well - and it appeared that more people attended
In the end,  after waiting a while the actual AGM only took about 10 minutes and felt a little flat. The guest speaker at the service was just right - though I felt the service itself could have been a little more ecumenical inclusive. Least that the way I saw it ."

Do you agree? We're looking for a lot more people to offer your perspectives. Please email: imd002@googlemail.com with your thoughts. Thanks.

IMA CONFERENCE at SWANWICK

We have received notification that the Industrial Mission Association (IMA) Bi-ennial Conference is taking place soon.

It is being held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick (so it's on our own doorstep!) from Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd April 2010.

The last such Conference was held at Stirling in 2008. One of the IMD-supported chaplains, Sheena Bryden, attended this and found it a hugely beneficial experience.

Sheena subsequently reported back to IMD Council on the proceedings. Don't worry we wouldn't necessarily expect you to do that - unless IMD provides funding for you to go!

If anyone would like to apply to go to Swanwick, then please get in touch with the IMD office mailto:imd02@queenshall.plus.com

CLERGY CONFERENCE - answering the call

FAITH and FOOTBALL!

Do they go together, you wonder?

[Perhaps - most especially when you see the latest moment when one player thumps another discreetly, or does the so-called 'professional' foul, or dives (without contact) to get a penalty or red card for opponent - you may wonder if these words belong in the same sentence!]

Obviously they do. God is interested in everyone and everything and can use everything. Here is a message from the County Ecumenical Development Officer, Rev'd Philip Webb:

"The Derby Diocese has been asked to work with Derby County to promote a Faith in Football day for the match against Reading on 28th November this year. They have been invited to take up to 500 seats - and then have an event with an inspirational speaker in the Pedigree Suite afterwards. Revd Andy Hutchinson (andy_hutchinson@hotmail.com) is organising this event in conjunction with the football club and will be glad to provide further details.

Attached is a short article about this venture, and here is the youtube address for an advert for the event

IMD COUNCIL MEETING  - MEMORABLE QUOTES!

The Council of Industrial Mission in Derbyshire (IMD) met last month (Tuesday 29th September) at Ashbourne Road Church in Derby. Phil Johnson laid on the refreshments in his usual plentiful and tasty supply.

13 Council members were in attendance. It was terrific to have representation from Derbyshire Fire&Rescue Service for the first time (thanks Lyn and Bill), and also from the City Centre Churches (thanks Paul).

Although it was a business meeting ("therefore, not interesting", I hear you say?) there were some interestingly memorable quotes that your reporter managed to jot down. Cohesion and coherence got a mention, and the question "what is a chaplain for?" was bounced around.

NEXT ENGAGE CONFERENCE - AND 'FUNKE' BALL!

[Hot off the press - they're having a ball! See below]

You remember the last one? (The newsletters are still on this page, further down!)

Perhaps you recall the question posted on the 'DISCUSSION TOPICS' page, as to whether this was the health and wealth Gospel?

Well......the Engage team (associated with Nottingham's business community) have started to advertise the next one, at

The Riverside Centre, Derby

on Saturday 10th October.

A copy of the email, giving the details you need, is linked at: The Countdown Begins

The Engage team have now also advertised the 'Funke Charity Ball' (7pm to 10pm) on the same night at the same Riverside venue.

Nigel Benn (former world boxing champion) is top of the list of big attractions. See advert:

METHODIST EVENTS and IMD PRESENCE

The Industrial Mission in Derbyshire were again invited to recent Methodist Church gatherings, at which we took material to display and hand out, and be on hand to chat to people.

The picture gallery has been assembled. It can be found at:

Inauguaration and Synod pictures

Look out for a write-up of the events shortly.

Sunday 30th August 2009, 3:30, was the inaurguaration event for the new enlarged Methodist Circuit in Derby. This was held at Queen's Hall, London Road - which just happens to be where IMD is based!

This was a chance, not only to see the new circuit come into being, not only to see what IMD is doing, but also to come to the office itself. Then you'd have known we're real and have a real base!

Saturday 5th September 2009 was the date of the next Methodist District Synod. This one took place at Littleover Methodist Church in Derby.

IMD has been represented at Synod for a number of years. Remember this one from Nottingham in April?

See

IMD at Methodist Synod for the write-up of that occasion, where once again there was good representation from real live chaplains for people to chat with about what they do and why it is important.

The events are now past. Pictures will be posted on the site shortly.

ALPHA at SOMERCOTES MEDICAL CENTRE

The world-renowned and highly effective Alpha Course - for introducing people to the Christian faith and what it means - is to be run at the Somercotes Medical Centre.

An introductory Alpha supper was held there in July.

The main body of the Alpha sessions are scheduled to start on Tuesday 22 September 2009. if you would like to go to this, then please email the IMD office:mailto:imd02@queenshall.plus.com and we will forward it to the centre chaplain, Rev'd Derek Beech.

Prior to commencement of the main sessions, there is to be an open prayer meeting at 7:30pm on Wednesday 9th September.

'RELIGION in a SECULAR SOCIETY' - discussion forum

'Religion in a Secular Society' is an evening event, on Monday 8th June, sponsored by the Friends of Melbourne Parish Church. They are bringing together experts from Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions, with Professor David Thomas in the chair.

The publicity notes that the secular world is "difficult terrain for religion" and "religions......find it difficult to make a contribution to public debate.......without ridicule or resentment"

Have you ever found it hard to bring your faith to have any impact in our world and communities? Here is a chance to share the issues and seek encouragement.

Their invitation is found in the link:

TAKE YOUR MINISTER TO WORK DAY!

Was on 18th to 21st May (isn't that 4 days?) is 'Take your Minister to Work Day.'

This was found on the Industrial Christian Fellowship site. As this is an interesting topic as far as IMD is concerned, the details and registration are linked into the DISCUSSION TOPICS page.

IMD AT METHODIST SYNOD

The Industrial Mission in Derbyshire were asked to do a stall at the Methodist Synod in Nottingham on Saturday 25th April 2009.

Once again there was good representation from real live chaplains for people to chat with about what they do and why it is important.

Click on IMD at Methodist Synod April 2009 to view pictures from the event.

A big thanks to everyone who was there in support:

 James Lindsay, railway chaplain

 Miles Mitson, Rolls-Royce chaplain

Sheena Bryden, Ashbourne Airfield Estate chaplain

 Phil Johnson, IMD administrator

Moira Biggins, EMA chaplain, IMD Council member

 Mair Bradley, police chaplain

We arrived at Bluecoat School in the morning and discovered that a car boot sale was being held at the same time as Synod! Once we had found out where the Synod was, we unloaded and got set up, in the 'Marketplace' where half a dozen other organisations were doing the same as us.

There were some Synod delegates arrived by this time, and a few wandered into the Marketplace before proceedings began.

While the morning session was in full swing, we got chance to grab a drink and catch up with each other. We had to be on our toes, though - as the main leisure seating area was doubling up at various times as a workshop venue, and eviction was a constant possibility!

When lunchtime arrived the Marketplace was a thronging hubbub of people. Many passed by and stopped to look at the material on display and to chat. The volunteers engaged with the delegates, and had many useful conversations.

There were 2 main themes on offer at the IMD stall: 1) Chaplaincy; 2) Faith and Work.

The chaplaincy focus was about showing where chaplains are currently operating and what good work they do, and where there are places that are in need of people to take on this role.

The Faith and Work focus was about trying to draw from people their ideas on how faith and work relate to each other. Someone said: "But we don't work." The reply was "Oh yes, you do! 'Work' covers volunteers and informal work as well."

Former Principal Chaplain in Austria

The former Principal Workplace Chaplain attached to IMD, Rev Canon Ian Winterbottom, has been to Austria recently.

Did we want to know that, you ask? Well maybe......

.......if only to wonder what this gathering is about!

The European Contact Group (ECG) is the pan-European body covering workplace faith and chaplaincy and other projects. Ian is a member of this body and attended the recent meeting in Linz, Austria.

'On the Buses' - so to speak

Do you remember those old Reg Varney 'On the Buses' films? When I was a lad (no, don't ask!) they seemed to be very popular, at least with the television channel schedulers. Not having anything better to do, during the proverbial mis-spent youth, I used to watch their antics and roll about laughing.

Why is this relevant? Well, on Monday October 20th, at Ashbourne Road, buses were very much the theme of the moment. The outgoing IMD chairman, Rev'd Canon Keith Orford, has spent his working life in the bus industry.

So when it came to making a presentation to Keith to mark his 11 years in the IMD chair, Council Member Jean Brocklehurst waxed lyrical about buses. She described all sorts of variety of buses, relating each one to some aspect of Keith's life, work or forthcoming retirement!

A card was presented to Keith, which, by coincidence (no collusion between Jean and Phil, surely?) had pictures of buses strewn all over it!

With refreshments  laid on, and a discussion about where things are heading led by the new chairman, Rev'd Christopher Harrison, a great evening was enjoyed by the 19 chaplains and Council members present.

The meeting with the Bishop of Repton, planned for 3rd December, has now been postponed. Sorry. Hope to see you all again soon.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS

There are known to have been 4 carol events that have been held in workplaces and led by the local chaplains. These were at:

1) At East Midlands Airport on Saturday 20th December, organised by the East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team (EMACT).

IMD Council Member and EMACT chaplain, Moira Biggins, writes:

"East Midlands Airport Chaplaincy Team held two Carol Services on Saturday 20 December, one in the Departure Lounge and one in the Check-in area.

Music – a mixture of classic and contemporary carols and Christmas songs – was provided by the choir of St Winifred’s Catholic Church in Shepshed, and a choir specially formed for the occasion by staff of the airline bmibaby.

Moira"

Moira has also supplied some pictures of the occasion:

Rev. Roy Monks can be seen speaking to the gathering at Chaplain Rev Roy Monks speaks

2) The Derbyshire Police carol service was held in Derby on Monday 15th December. Police Chaplain Mair Bradley writes:

"The Derbyshire Constabulary held their Annual Family Carol Service on Monday 15 December 2008 at St Paul's Church, Mansfield Road, Derby. We were very pleased that the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire was able to join us.  It was also a pleasure to welcome the Umbrella children again this year; it is always a delight to have them with us and they take a lot of pleasure in dressing up as Nativity characters.  The Advent candles were lit by two Umbrella children and two Police family children.  A lovely family occasion; those who were unable to be there missed out.

Kind regards,
Mair"

3) The Nightingale Hall at Rolls-Royce on Wednesday 17th December, organised by the Chaplains Miles Mitson and Nigel Selby.

4) At Derby station on 2 occasions during that week, organised by the Chaplain James Lindsay, who writes (on Tuesday 16th):

"Had a fantastic time carolling at Derby Station today 12-1 with the kind help of YWAM and three instruments. It was a joy to proclaim the wonderful truths of Christ to staff and customers. God willing we are doing another stint this Thursday 3-4pm in the atation foyer if you'd like to join us.

Whatever happens, peace be with you and your family for Christmas and every blessing for the New Year."

Fire & Rescue HQ Chaplains Commissioned!

The Chaplains to the Fire & Rescue HQ in Littleover, Derby, Captain Sean Andrews and Rev. Ian Worrall, have been commissioned for this role. This took place on Tuesday 27th January at the Community Fire Station in Alfreton, in the presence of some 50 Fire Officers and Firefighters, HQ personnel, Clergy, Chaplains other interested people.

The commissioning of Sean and Andrew was embedded in a ceremony inside the appliance bay. Lyn Voce from the Service HQ organised the event and opened proceedings, after which the Derbyshire Chief Fire Officer, Brian Tregunna, welcomed everyone and spoke of the importance the Service places on its people.

The Chair of IMD, Rev'd Christopher Harrison, presided over the commissioning event (photo above). Rev. Ian Worrall was Commissioned on behalf of the Methodist Church by the District Chairman, Rev. Wes Blakey. Captains Sean Andrews's commissioning was carried out by the Bishop of Repton, Humphrey Southern. (l to r, Sean, Ian, Wes, Chris, Humphrey.)

The Bishop chose as the Scripture reading for his address, Exodus 3v1-6, the story of Moses and the Burning Bush - a most appropriate item for a Fire and Rescue Service gathering!

Either side of the address there was the singing of "Who would true valour see" and "Shine, Jesus, shine". The Firefighters prayer was offered by a serving officer.

Proceedings were concluded with the signing of the Chaplaincy Agreement between the Service and IMD and the chaplains themselves (photo above, l to r, Chief Fire Officer Brian Tregunna, Captain Sean, Rev. Ian, Rev'd Christopher.)

Refreshments beforehand and buffet lunch afterwards were warmly received by everyone. Many people took the opportunity to chat with each other about the occasion and anything else of interest.

There was also an IMD display to look at.

CONFERENCES

The Industrial Mission in Derbyshire have recently been represented at 2 Church events.

The Synod of the Methodist Nottingham and Derby District took place at Queen Elizabeth's School in Ashbourne on Saturday September 6th - the weekend that Ashbourne was cut off by floods!

The IMD stall displayed various chaplaincy work that goes on around the county, and our thanks are due to those chaplains who responded to the call to provide information and pictures.

The Clergy Conference of Derby CoE Diocese took place at The Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick from 5th to 7th November.

IMD again had a stall out, this time with various leaflets inviting applications to join the chaplaincy team and SOWN, as well the displays about chaplaincy work.

We are working on our display material - please advise on how to get from quantity to quality!

WORLD OF WORK (WOW)

SOWN (IMD’s Spirituality of Work Network) is a partner in WOW – set up to bring into ongoing dialogue leaders in the various aspects of the economic, social and ethical life of the City of Derby. It has partly grown out of a series of debates held during past DCP weeks; partly as a commitment made to continue the work of Common Purpose. WOW has a growing membership.

Health – physical, mental and spiritual is the   overarching beneficial factor in our family, community and working lives. These are all vitally interconnected in creating life in all its fullness. We talk much today of work life balance, sufficient time for recreation, relaxation; time for family, for each other and simply for ourselves.  So many of our illnesses are psychosomatic – back pain anxiety and depression are prominent as reasons for absence from the workplace and causes and effects both there and in the home.  We need to explore the meaning of good work and what we mean by a healthy society.

A PILGRIMAGE TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

  George Seabury

On Saturday 2nd September 2006 eight of us set off from Stansted airport to North West Spain. We took a long taxi ride to a town called Sarria where we obtained our credential passport  which we had to get officially stamped along the route. This was done in churches and designated cafι’s along the route where there were no roads. We planned on doing the 66 mile walk in four and half days to arrive at the Cathedral at 12noon on the Thursday for the Pilgrims Blessing. The journey at first was very steep through forests and rough tracks. Each day the mileage varied from 13 to 18 miles. This depended upon finding accommodation to sleep for the night in the towns and small villages.

After the third day all of us were beginning to have physical problems – sore spots, blisters, swollen feet, heat rash, muscle and leg pains. The temperature was very hot reaching the 90’s by 2p.m. Along the route we met one British pilgrim who had set off in France and we were the only English persons that he had seen in 9 days. The places we stayed at were Sarria, Portomarin Palais-de-Re, Arzua, Arca and Santiago de Compostela.

Accommodation could not be booked in advance, except for Santiago, and accommodation was room only. Food and accommodation was very reasonably priced, as this was not a tourist destination, but a pilgrimage. The route was well marked with yellow arrows on trees, walls, footpaths, etc., with small stone pillars which had the mark of the scallop shell (the pilgrim sign) on, and with the number of kilometres to Santiago. We arrived at the Cathedral at 12.05 to receive the blessing in Latin. We had come 73 miles from Sarria!

George was formerly chaplain at ASDA Spondon and the Eagle centre in Derby. He is a Methodist Lay Preacher in the Derby East Circuit and a hospital volunteer.
